Welcome to Clave!

The Shadow World is full of whispers and rumours that Valentine Morgenstern, renegade Shadowhunter, is alive and well. Not only that but speculation is spreading that the cunning Nephilim is searching for one of the most revered treasures of the Shadowhunter world - the Mortal Cup. With it, he could create an army that would make his former Circle look like a group of missionless fanatics.

But the Clave are prepared. For years they have been summoning the second born of Shadowhunter families and training them especially as part of an Anti-Circle organization. If Valentine tries to recruit his old followers again, the Clave will be ready, and this time the Circle would be fighting against their own children....

It was fairly early morning (at least where he was going), but Margaret was not one to dawdle in bed, nor was he. Valentine dressed himself in a fine suit as always, something comfortable besides gear which he felt was unnecessary right now. Once readied, he raised his hand and touched the ring on his right hand, vanishing instantly. Travel was easy when you had the means. He reappeared in Margaret's hallway, before making his way through the building and where he would usually find her. He needed to move forward with their experiments, especially now that his being alive was highly rumoured around.

Downworld was full of gossips, after all. For now. The wicked would always perish under the the righteous sword of angels.

Valentine found her in the main laboratory, a very large one, much bigger than his own. He conducted his own experiments, of course, and he had been a very big part of it all, but the advantage of having a head scientist was that he had time for other things too. Her focus was science, even though she was a capable Shadowhunter herself. He moved through the lab, neither loudly nor silently, until he was facing Margaret over the counter she was working at.

"I have arranged for a few of our newest members to meet with us later. Their positions in the Institute would make for useful intel, particularly in regards to our little experiments," he said.

Margaret had never been one to sleep much, and as such, she could often be found in the laboratory at all sorts of hours. She got sleep here and there when she needed it, but she wasn’t one to stick to a usual schedule. Her mind was far too active for such things, and once she had any kind of breakthrough, it was hard fought to see her walk away for it. Of course at the moment, she wasn’t in the throes of a breakthrough. She was merely continuing with what had been a promising one earlier in the week. It was an injection meant to render a warlock’s magic useless. The injection itself had trace amounts of angel blood to target the demonic blood that gave warlocks their abilities as well as a variety of other chemicals and elements to allow it to bind within the body.

While the results were promising thus far, the injection itself was not stable. The effects burned off far too quickly as the demonic blood ultimately attacked the injection and broke it down until it was nonexistent in the system, which rendered magic usable again. Still, she had managed to achieve a period in which it was not, and that in itself was useful. She just needed to see if there was a way to further stabilize the injection—find a way to prevent it from being broken down.

Currently Margaret was looking through a microscope—studying how the injection and warlock blood interacted on a cellular level. It was really quite fascinating to see the initial coating of the cells that the injection caused followed by the breakdown of that coating over time. It wasn’t a uniform breakdown either—something she noted—which likely meant that the return of a warlock’s magic after an injection of this was gradual rather than instantaneous.

The sound of footsteps in the lab caused her to look up from the microscope, tucking a strand of short blonde hair behind her ear as she did. ”Care for a look,” she asked as she stepped back and gestured at the microscope. ”I am still working on a way to stabilize the formula, but it’s rather fascinating how it works,” she commented. ”Will my brother be bringing his boy,” she inquired, more out of curiosity than any sense of attachment.

There was something ever so curious about experimentation; some failed, some succeeded...some didn't last. Failure wasn't something he cared for, but it was something he took in his stride. Pride before the fall, after all. There was no point denying; the original Uprising had failed and it was from the lack of loyalty of certain people that were supposed to love him. That he was supposed to love. Still, love was weakness and he would be more careful now.

He moved around the bench at Margaret's question until he stood next to her. "Certainly," Valentine said, gripping the microscope and bending a little so that he could see into it. He examined the blood and the formula at work for a few minutes, agreeing inwardly (for now) that it was indeed an interesting sight. Experimentation and science wasn't usually a quick thing. It took time to perfect these kinds of things. This much was true for mundanes, too, as far as he knew. He straightened up, stepping out of her space some. Even if he was the kind to crowd people, this was a delicate area. No one could afford accidental damages.

"It looks to be improving, at least. The last experiment went rather well, I think," Valentine said. Even stopping a Warlock's magic temporarily would be an advantage. It left them vulnerable, after all, and they weren't known for their fighting skills as vampires and werewolves were. There were other projects they had too, including other Downworlders', but this was current.

Valentine walked slowly around the bench again. "Yes. Of course, your brother still has his loyalty to prove, but your nephew appears to be a promising individual. As are his sisters. You know a few of course, but would you like to accompany me to meet the rest?" He said.

As a scientist, Margaret was used to failure. Experimentation was often about the process of elimination—tweaking and perfecting things just a little at a time. Very rarely did something go the way she wanted it to the first time she attempted it. After all, if it were easy, someone else would have already done it. So as a result Margaret really only truly considered something to be a failure when there were no usable results from whatever experiment she was working on. When that happened, she was never happy. So while this particular experiments wasn’t the result that she wanted, it was a step in the right direction, and as such, a success. Now she would need to continue to work on perfecting it.

For the time being though, she was more than comfortable showing Valentine the progress that was being made. So she stepped away and let him take a look at the results of the most recent attempt to bind a warlocks’ magic. ”It is,” Margaret said when Valentine mentioned that the formula looked to be improving. ”The formula is lasting longer before the demonic blood breaks it down. I have a few other ideas that will perhaps make the compound hardier. I’ll see about implementing them in the next attempt,” she said.

”I’m well aware of that,” she commented when Valentine mentioned that her brother still had his loyalty to prove. ”I’m confident he won’t turn on us though,” she added. Her brother wouldn’t give them up, but he may withdraw as he did in the past in order to save his own skin. He was loyal, but only to an extent. ”The girls are promising as well though Aurora has yet to show any signs of enhancement. Perhaps I might acquire a blood sample to see if the blood took as it did in her siblings,” she noted off-handedly.

”Of course. I can step away from this for a bit,” she said when Valentine asked if she wanted to accompany him. It was true that she preferred to stay focused on the experimental side of things rather than the planning portion of operations, but she had a level head and also preferred to have an idea of what was going on. Besides, it would be good to see her family.

Valentine nodded. It was all about the determination and willingness to see these experiments through. Warlock magic was strong, even if their bodies were nothing more than human. It was what made them different to vampires and werewolves, whose demonic diseases gave them strength beyond human capacity. Warlocks were half-half, and it meant that it wouldn't be easy to stop their magic, but it didn't put them off. "Good. Even as it is, it gives us the advantage of stopping them temporarily, though I'm sure I can say with confidence that neither of us wish to stop at that," Valentine said.

Margaret was a great scientist, after all; unless there was no way to move forward, she was hardly going to stop there.

"His loyalty to the cause has kept them in good enough graces; I cannot fault them that," Valentine said. "Yes, a blood sample would be wise. If her blood shows no difference to her brother and sister's, then we simply need to keep an eye on her and for her to keep us updated. If her blood isn't the same, then we will simply deem the experiment a failure, but she still appears to be loyal to our cause."

Valentine had told the recruits to meet him in a particular place, so he took Margaret's arm and twisted his ring, teleporting to the place. They were there first, of course, and he carefully made absolutely sure the location was secure, but there was no need. It was.

Cordelia Nightrose didn’t accept invitations from just anyone.

That person or group had to hold a certain level of intrigue as well as something that Cora wanted or needed. Not to mention that they had to be worthy of her time, live up to her very high standards. As such opportunities like this did not come along very often due to her own particular requirements or demands. Many people either couldn’t achieve that level of interest with her or felt like they didn’t have to. That was the trouble with people these days, Cora thought. They would settle for anything. They dulled their tastes and senses to such a degree that they couldn’t tell between what was good for them or what was bad for them anymore. It might have been tragic if Cora had cared enough about other people.

So when Cora received the fire message while she was in the library, her first thought was wondering who had the audacity to message her. She’d already been talking to her parents recently so it was unlikely to be them. Perhaps some rogue chancer who thought he could charm her with a spontaneous display of foolishness or something. But as she opened the note, she realised within seconds that it wasn’t some prank or a pathetic attempt at flirting with her. No, it was something much more important.

This was a major development, something her parents would be very keen to hear about. But not yet. Cora wasn’t one to go back with half-fetched information. No, she would find out more about this summons and make sure she had something to report back. Besides the prospect of knowing about something before her parents did was quite delicious really. She would relish it for as long as she could.

It wasn’t much to pretend she was going out to scout for some information. It was something that had been occupying her time between further study and training, since she’d arrived. Of course she made sure to dress her best for the meeting. To present the best image for the Nightrose family as possible. This turned into a smart black trousers, a blue blouse and a formal black jacket. Her blonde hair was combed to immaculate standard. She left make up for once. She wasn’t going there to seduce anyone. She was going to make sure that a professional standard was held to represent her family.

The location wasn’t far so Cordelia took a cab and (once again) used her glamour to fake exit the car, thus tricking the driver into getting out of the car to chase after her and then promptly taking some of his cash. She had made him stop a block or two away from where she needed to be and so she walked along with an air of importance as she mingled through the crowd.

Eventually she turned in to the meeting spot and she’d barely stepped into it when she spotted a familiar face. Actually two if you included Valentine, some of illustrations she’d seen of him from Clave sketches.

“Valentine Morgenstern,” she addressed discreetly once she was out of sight of the main streets. “Aunt Margaret,” she gave a nod to her aunt.

Felix had been looking for that chance to fix the mistakes of his parents. Long had he dreamed and spoke about the possibility of a new group who would bring order to the Nephilim again. He had wanted to start one himself, but times had changed since the Circle was around, and such an attempt could seriously backfire on him before things even went off the ground. The last thing he wanted to do was rot in a prison in the Silent City... or do what his parents did and kiss the backsides of the Clave in order to retain his freedom. But damn it, he had to find a way out.

Now he had found that chance. He had been given special information that not only were people seeking to reform the Circle, but that the rumors were true and that Valentine Morgenstern was still alive. Felix was a bit skeptical, and told himself that he would have to look upon the man before he fully believed it. Finding the location he was informed about, he made his way in. Sure enough, there he was. Felix formed a smirk.

"And to think, there are those who were laughed at for believing that you were still alive," said Felix to Valentine. He then bowed. "Felix Bloodthorn. It's a true honor, sir. I am at your service."

Mackenzie had awoken that morning, to a very pleasant summons for a meeting of some Circle members. A select gathering. Even better. Of course, it was something that he would find pleasant but a great many other Nephilim and Downworlders wouldn't agree. In fact they'd find it very much unpleasant and then the fear would spread. It put a smile on Mackenzie's face as he thought about their faces when the confirmation eventually happened, that told them the Circle was truly back. There was so much fear already, sometimes Mackenzie worried if the reveal was capable of topping that. Many were already convinced of the return and a great many others were clinging to the thinnest veil of hope that they could. It was pitiful really.

He quickly showered, ate something and made an excuse to some people he had plans with today. Nothing important, some sport really. Nothing that came anywhere close to this on the rank of importance. Besides pulling out of such activities gave Mackenzie an enigmatic air that served his purpose well in the Council. On the one hand his 'hatred' of the Circle was so transparent but on the other, away from the Council, he was something of an enigma when he wasn't with 'friends'. It was quite enjoyable playing all of these games.

But summons like these really stirred the blood. It gave him a purpose that also gave him more focus. In the past sixteen years, Circle activity had been extremely low given Valentine's necessity to be in hiding. But now was finally the time for some action. Mackenzie was ready for it. He was ready to rejoin the Circle and avenge Sienna's death. He could at last, tell his children that justice for their mother would happen. What he wouldn't tell them was that it wasn't exactly top priority though. That was getting the Circle up and running again properly, finding out who was loyal and who wasn't. As well as providing what intelligence he could from the Council.

He arrived at the meeting place with plenty of time. He grinned a little when he saw his old friend, nodding respectfully before turning his attention to the new members that were showing up. There were a few women, young and older and some boys. One of them spoke up about people being laughed at for believing Valentine was alive. “Those who do the laughing cling to a sad delusion. It's pathetic really.” He walked over to the boy. “Mackenzie Dragonheart,” he said, holding out his hand before musing. “Bloodthorn, eh?” he asked. He vaguely recalled the boy's parents but the boy seemed keen enough which was excellent. “The doubters will soon learn the truth. And you can be among those laughing at them.” He told the boy encouragingly. Although they would be doing more than laughing, it would still be nice to have the last laugh, ultimately. Too long had they been forced to linger in the shadows because of the Clave.

Turning back to his old friend, Mackenzie grinned as he approached him. “You are creating quite the stir in the Council. When they are not talking emergency measures, should you return, they are arguing among themselves as to the rumours. I would say there has been significant delay in anything else being dealt with thanks to this.” He laughed a little. “It's quite wonderful.”

Lina had been waiting for this meeting for some time now. For a good many years, she had been in secret talks with Valentine, but that's just what they were... secret. Now, there was to be a REAL meeting in her opinion. Things would really get going now, and the Circle would soon come back, stronger than ever. No more rumors, no more hiding in the shadows. The Shadow World would feel their presence again, and Lina fully believed that this time there would be no mistakes. She was loyal to Valentine, and knew he would make sure of that.

Lina had portalled from London early so that she could grab a bite to eat before joining in the festivities. She didn't feel there would be a buffet set out at the meeting. This was no Mundane gathering after all. Once she ate, she arrived at the meeting place, and fashionably on time too with her black dress with matched heels and fedora.

"Hello everyone, just arrived from a little cafe down the street. I glamoured myself of course." she said. "Excellent nosh for this area. You should all try it." She then gave a reverent bow of the head toward Valentine and Mackenzie, showing her respect for their authority and ongoing gratitude that she could be part of all this again. She then turned to her nephew, Felix.

"Oh Felix, my dear boy," she said. "Your Auntie is so proud of you for pledging your allegiance. So sad that dear brother and his wife have not come around. At least they raised a wise son."

THE DARK AND WONDERFUL UNKNOWN;

Kaiden couldn’t help as though feel that this entire thing was a giant waste of his time. He wasn’t about to voice that out loud though. It was an honor to be invited to actually attend a meeting such as this one—something that had been stressed to him by his parents. He was eighteen now and in a position to show how valuable the Nightrose family was to the cause even though it had been a cause his parents had abandoned at one point. It was fairly hypocritical and Kaiden was certain that his sister’s had gotten the same “do us proud” speech, but here he was regardless. He was loyal the cause after all. Downworlders were a problem that needed to be dealt with. They were impure and shared far too much associate with demons for them to ever be allowed to operate as freely as they did, which was something most shadowhunters failed to recognize.

In all of this though, the majority of Kaiden’s doubt stemmed from the man leading the cause. It wasn’t something that he’d ever give voice to though. He knew that Valentine was powerful. He’d proven to be such after he had nearly managed to pull off his plan. At the end of the day though, he had still failed. He had faked his death and hid away for years now. Kaiden knew he likely had been rebuilding and replanning, but the idea of blindly following a man who had failed before simply didn’t sit well with Kaiden. It wasn’t as if he thought he could do it himself. He wasn’t quite that arrogant. He just didn’t see how it was wise to swear loyalty so easily to someone who had so spectacularly lost all of the ground he’d had made. The failed coup had resulted in shadowhunters and downworlders actually fighting together. It hadn’t served well at all in terms of driving a wedge, and now here they all were with an incredibly tolerant generation of shadowhunters.

So while loyal, he remained cautious even as he walked into his first meeting that involved the man in question. His aunt was there, as was his oldest sister looking smart and pressed in a way that wasn’t surprising to Kaiden. Unlike her though, Kaiden had opted to dress in more or less of what he would wear on a hunt—black on black and armed to teeth. He knew he hadn’t been followed, but one could never be too careful and he didn’t know everyone here well enough to trust them to have done the same. He did recognize Esther’s friend, but aside from that, the rest were strangers other than Valentine himself. He didn’t know the man, but he was recognizable to say the least.

Unlike some of the others, Kaiden opted to remain quiet—simply offering a nod of greeting as he joined the group, mismatched eyes taking in those around him. He’d talk if addressed, but he didn’t figure he was here to do the talking anyway.

Aurora had been invited alongside her siblings and she was grateful that she had taken a lot of time to herself, kept to herself and not interacted so much between the attack on Idris (and New York, as the story went) and now. Not that she and her siblings were ones to meet up every second of the day, which she was grateful for; she could only roll her eyes so much before they popped out of her skull. That would hardly be useful for the Circle. Of course, as much as she loved her new hair, she was a little reluctant to draw too much attention.

Her power...she was so late in it blooming, but whether that was normal for the non-physical powers was another matter. She didn't know about the other experiments, presumably if anyone knew it would be Valentine. Aurora wasn't nervous; on the contrary, she was looking forward to this. Her whole life's work was finally getting somewhere, though she couldn't help a niggling feeling in her gut. She couldn't really describe it or figure it out.

Aurora reached the place they were meeting, slipping inside rather quietly. She had put her hair up into a ponytail to draw as little attention to her hair as possible. That and her power really didn't do good things to her hair right now. She wore clothes she thought appropriate for an important meeting. She nodded her greeting to Valentine and to her aunt. "Thank you for inviting me, I'm honoured," Aurora said.

Her brother and sister were there, along with her aunt...she recognised Felix too, only somewhat. Aurora walked over to stand near him and her brother. "You're Esther's friend, right? I'm Aurora Nightrose," she said to Felix. She nodded to Mackenzie and Annalina, though she didn't know them.

Valentine watched as followers, new and old, entered the room. He'd chosen a place that was both abandoned and unlikely to be bothered by anyone. After all, he couldn't be seen to be alive to the public just yet. At least, no more than rumours. It was a good way of spreading panic as no one knew the truth. Of course, he wasn't planning on hiding forever; he would change the Clave, make it better, someday soon. The Clave had fallen deep in its tolerance to the half-demon scum that roamed their world.

He acknowledged each of them, though he wasn't particularly talkative. He had not been one for small talk. The Circle would rise again and they certainly had a decent number here, though he hadn't elected to meet them all at once. "If it is anything like years ago, the Clave may well prove to convince themselves that everything is alright. They are weak and need to be strengthened," he spoke in response to Felix and Mackenzie's talk of the Clave and the rumours.

Some of his former followers had sadly disappointed him; he was all for welcoming those who may have retreated just as he had, for he'd had no other choice, but some had turned soft. The Bloodthorns appeared to have some decent members left. The Nightrose children were all here, their parents clearly having instructed them well.

"You're all here. I am going to cut to the chase. As you know, our mission is to improve the Clave, bring it back to its former glory," Valentine spoke. "Some of you are aware of this, some of you are subjects. Our race is small in number, dwindling. It is why we need the Mortal Cup. Years ago, Margaret, myself and a few others started some experiments, to improve the future of the Nephilim, and it has brought out a mix of results, though some are currently a work in progress. Some of the subjects have shown a general enhancement of capabilities while others have shown to have a specific power."

He paused. "With enough work, perhaps one day we can create a stronger race. However, we still need the results of the current experiments and that is one of the tasks I will need assistance with, to assess the outcome of the experiments, what their abilities are," Valentine said.

It would be a lie to say that Leona hadn't been very excited to get the invitation for this meeting. Even though she was still bearing things in mind that she and Felix had discussed, she still believed that it would be good to be part of the Circle again. Maybe help it to avoid some of the mistakes of the past. After all, there was always room for improvement. Something her parents and instructors had always said. As a child, it had felt like an insult. Like she was being told that she wasn't good enough, no matter what she did. But as she'd grown up, she'd realised that the words were encouraging. There was always room to become even better than what one was at the moment. Better meant stronger. Better meant faster. Better meant even more talented. Better was promising.

When she reached the meet up location, she was dressed in black jeans, a thick black hoodie and her contacts in. She kept her hood up as she looked around at some of the others. She recognised many of them around the Institute. It was encouraging to see who was part of the cause. Although she wondered if any of them were here as spies. It wouldn't be a total surprise although she was quite willing to teach them the meaning of pain if they gave themselves away. Actually, she thought to herself. That sounded like an awful lot of fun. In a way, she kind of wanted that to happen.

That would also demonstrate her powers to Valentine. Something that she was looking forward to doing, immensely. She watched as people made introductions and then listened attentively as Valentine began to speak. As he spoke of the experiments, her lips began to quirk upwards. She was very tempted to demonstrate and show off her true power. But she remembered the need for caution and simply turned her attention to the leader of the group.

“What about some demonstrations?” she suggested. “For those who know their gifts.”

Felix felt uneasy enough in the presence of his aunt, despite how pleasant she was acting around him. Really, as confident and dedicated as he looked, he felt somewhat uncomfortable being there. He had his prejudice. He had his goals to not be the failure that his parents were. But that little voice that served as his conscience, one that he had disregarded quite often, told him that his allegiance with Valentine would not end well.

Valentine's words drew him in though. He could see why the old Circle was so drawn to the man. The words he spoke and the way he spoke almost made him want to walk right into Hell with the man.

This all temprarily parted from his mind when Leona spoke. In the crowd, he hadn't noticed her in the room. He didn't gawk or give her some goofy grin. His face remained quite emotionless. However, there was a sparkle in his eyes. He wasn't one who fawned over beautiful women, but there was something about her. Perhaps he would run into her some time and be able to introduce himself properly.

He was drawn out of his thoughts by another girl who was speaking to him. The girl mentioned Esther, and Felix nodded.

"Yes, Esther and I are quite close," he said. "Felix Bloodthorn." And that was the extent of his greeting. He glanced back at Leona and took in what she said. What gifts could such an intriguing woman possess?

Valentine had been reluctant to let the demon experiments into this meeting, but he had been reassured that she was trustworthy. Now, given his experience with his own son, he didn't completely trust her, but he was more than capable of dealing with the worst case scenario. There still may be use for the demonic ones yet, he simply had to analyse their strengths and their disposition. He wasn't meeting all of his comrades in one go; it was far safer to meet in smaller groups.

He quirked an eyebrow at her suggestion, but that was as far as his physical reaction went. He had, of course, come prepared for such an occasion; he very usually was few steps ahead, preparing for various outcomes. He was eager to see their talents, should they be known. "Of course, demonstrations would be quite useful. I have brought one of those halfbreeds the Clave seems to love so much for such an occasion...should any of your talents need a target. Benedict," he said, calling out the name of one of his followers, who brought a bound warlock into the middle of the room.

"Its magic is currently...inaccessible," Valentine said, coldly. Margaret's serum was still not perfected, but it at least temporarily made a warlock unable to use their magic. "Would you like to do the honours, Miss. Nightwish?"

A blaze of pleasure burned through Leona as Valentine acquiesced to her suggestion of a demonstration. Even better, instead of getting her to test her ability on some colleague, he had a truly deserving creature brought forward, a warlock. Leona’s features darkened in sadistic pleasure as she looked at the warlock. Her fingers flexed and then tightened into a fist repeatedly. “Thank you, Valentine,” she said confidently. “My ability requires a specific target although I can switch targets very easily.” She doubted that the warlock was going to make it out of here alive but just in case some freak occurrence happened, she didn’t want him to think that her focusing on one target was in any way limiting. If she multiple targets in her sights she could switch between them. Not to mention that the lingering pain from her attacks usually kept people down for a little bit before they started to recover. This warlock would soon know what that felt like.

She nodded and stepped towards the warlock. “Hello creature,” she said offering a bright and beautiful smile before she concentrated, inflicting a violent pain on the warlock. She delighted in the pain that he suffered, enjoyed the screams that began. It was always thrilling, like a buzz through the blood. A sense of accomplishment that she was doing this and she was that powerful.

So many dreams were broken and so much was sacrificed
Was it worth the ones we loved and had to leave behind?
So many years have past, who are the noble and the wise?
Will all our sins be justified?
So far, the gifts his experiments had been given were all rather different and varied. Some were enhanced all around, some were stronger or faster...he had heard whispers of elemental damage. Valentine still had to find out all of the results, but for now he had heard good things along with a couple of less than desirable results. Experiments weren't always perfect, after all. "By all means, show us. Just leave a little for anyone else who wishes to demonstrate," he said. The warlock wasn't walking out of here alive, so it didn't matter to him who finished it off.

Although he had been wary of inviting one of the demon blooded ones here, she seemed fairly capable. She was showing a lot of loyalty. Valentine didn't plan to let his guard down, of course, but he watched her at work and wondered whether or not she could do it on multiple at once. Not that it mattered...her power would be useful in their fight against the Downworld and in changing the Clave. "Impressive," he said, not one to over-indulge people, but since he rarely handed it out, he considered it enough.

"Your ability is strong enough. Whether or not you can hit multiple targets or not, matters not," he said. He looked around. "Anyone else?."
