When Evangeline was born, it was evident that she inherited the Lightwood looks. She had a head of dark curls and her eyes eventually turned into a light shade of nearly clear blue. As she grew older her hair took on a slight golden brown hue with dark roots. They're like natural highlights that appear to be growing out. Today she stands at 5'9 and has a lean, feminine form. She scrutinizes the imperfections that she has, even though they're slight. Her arms are too long for her body and her torso doesn't quite flow into her curvy hips like she preferred. In an effort to hide these flaws, she's very selective about what she wears. She dresses in all black like other shadowhunters but puts her own twist on the outfits she wears like her sister Isabelle.
Eva has two different sides of herself. The one side is reserved for when she's in training, at the Institute, and around people she doesn't know. She's serious but willing to cooperate with others. Even though she's very calm and collected, she knows things are more complicated than people make them out to be. With her empathetic ability she can sense how people are feeling and goes off of that. She's also very charismatic, using her traits and training to make others feel like they're important and that she listens.
The other side of her personality is reserved for when she's on her own or with the people she knows the best. She's very much the same, still empathetic and charismatic. She likes to have a good time. She's pretty laid back when it comes to spending free time with others. She's willing to go along with most plans. She lives for her time away from training even though she's extremely dedicated. An equal balance between work and leisure is important to her. When she's around those that know her best she can't help but be sarcastic, teasing others. It's not so much that she has two alternate realities but rather that she takes her responsibilities very seriously and holds herself to a very high standard. When those standards aren't pressing, she relaxes the best she can.
Despite the facade she puts on, she's not completely confident in herself. The weight of expectations on her can cause her to break. She is a perfectionist which means she criticizes everything she does. It doesn't take much for her to second-guess herself and she feels like sometimes she's just acting. She has Impostor Syndrome although she doesn't know that's exactly what plagues her. Her siblings are really the only ones that see even a fraction of her insecurities. She's pretty bitter towards her parents because of the split and their prior involvement with the Circle but she tries not to let it show. She tends to leave the Institute when she's in a mood and doesn't tell anyone where she's going. During those times she can often be found somewhere in nature, reflecting on the solitude.
Evangeline was born in New York to Maryse and Robert Lightwood as the second oldest. She was the second out of four children for the couple. Eva's birth order would prove to be one of the best things that ever happened to her. During her childhood, she was raised in the same way that most shadowhunter children were. Some of her best memories were the times she spent with her siblings. For the longest time it was just Alec, Izzy, and herself. After a while, it became apparent that Eva was different, developing her own personality that set her aside from the average shadowhunter. She wasn't sure why she was ahead of the others her age but it didn't bother her. It was just how she was. She's always had sharp vision, almost supernaturally so. She's also a borderline empath. People's motives and emotions have always been fairly clear to her. She doesn't know that she was experimented on yet and chalks those things up to her talents.
When Eva was 12, she began her training at the Shadowhunter Academy. It was an exciting time because by then she had a strong desire to prove herself. She was a Lightwood and wanted to show the world that her family's youngest generation was capable of greatness. She got her opportunity to prove herself when she became a member of the Anti Circle. Since she was the second born she was committed to the organization. Her parents' involvement in the Circle was another reason why she was considered an important asset to be a part of the Anti Circle. From 12 years to the present day she's lived up to the pressure on not just herself but the Lightwood name as well.
Eva's taken her studies extremely seriously and excels in everything she does. She took a shine to the languages taught at the Academy and has an eye for politics. Since politics were extremely ingrained in Anti Circle training, she felt like it was a natural thing for her to be a part of. Especially with her sharp wit. Her specialized training has included close combat methods that revolve around her favorite weapon, a swiss dagger, and politics. Now that she's nearly 18 she will be looking to get involved in their world's politics. She knows it's a difficult and complicated job but she knows she's capable of doing it.
Despite her natural inclination for politics, she didn't take inspiration from her parents. Although Eva does love them, deep down, her feeling for them have been clouded by various things. The biggest one was her parents' separation. She knows that there was never something such as a "happy family" but deep down she always wished for more affection. The way she's dealt with it is to harden herself to anyone who wishes to get inside, outside of her siblings and closest friends of course. She knows that the Circle was a part of her parents' past and that they didn't feel that way anymore but she feels that it's her duty protect their world against another uprising. It's been woven into her character much like any other influence.
Outside of her training at the Academy and her interests in politics, she does have other interests. While she's quite serious during her training, she balances it out with fun when she can. She loves to be outdoors, whether it's hiking or just enjoying the sunrise over a body of water. She feels more alive and more connected with herself when she's out there. Just like when she's fighting. She prefers to fight up close and personal, the adrenaline making her feel alive and powerful. Other than those two things, she enjoys the arts. She often goes to small concerts and performances in the city. One of her biggest secrets is that she loves to sing but knows that she can never do anything with the talent. Instead, she dreams of if her life was different and she would have the freedom to do that. Over the years, she's taught herself how to play the piano and guitar. She has a secret notebook of songs beneath her bed that she's written.
